Ladies v Gentlemen Challenge Match

Tuesday 24th August 2010

Rink 1

Liz Cobbold; Sue; Caroline   v   Philip; Lawrie; Chris Springall

Result - Ladies won 32-6

On paper, this looked a clsoe game, but the ladies dominated throughout, and ran away with a game- and match-winning score.  All the ladies played very well, but I blame Joe.  If he hadn't taught Caroline to play, we might have won!

Rink 2

Chris B; 'Delia'; Jane   v   David P; Richard B; Mike B

Result - Men won 19-8

A closer match than the score suggests.  All the 'ladies' bowled well, but both David P and Mike B decided this was the night they would bowl at their best.

Rink 3

Margaret; Lucy; Liz Cockerill   v   David Gregory; Dave Greenacre; Trevor

Result - Men won 19-15

The ladies were well in front for most of the game, but a 6 later on changed everything, and the men gradually pulled ahead.

Rink 4

Janet; Jenny; Julia  v  John T; Joe; Colin

Result - Men won 13-10

A tightly-contested match throughout, never more than 2 points between the teams.  Well done, Colin, ably supported by John and Joe.

Match Result - Ladies 65  Gentlemen 57

A smashing night.  Great competitive bowling and played in a wonderful spirit.  The overall standard of bowling in the club gets better and better.

The rink played very well, after lots of rain, and being flooded on Monday evening. Thank you, David, and I was pleased to see that both you and Janet were able to play.

I tried to use players as skips who do not usually get the opportunity through the season and I was pleased to hear that they all enjoyed themselves.

I tried to rewrite the rules, to claim the men won by 3 rinks to 1, but this was over-ruled!

Congratulations to the ladies for winning what, I hope, will become an annual Challenge Match.  As I said, the cup may be small, but winning it is very significant.  Well done, ladies - but we will have our revenge next year!

A special thanks to Delia, who stood in for the ladies when we appeared to be short of players.  I'm worried that Jill ever lets him out at night.

Thanks to everybody who played and helped in any way.  A great evening.

Richard

Great Melton v Shotesham - 19-8-2010

Match Result - 68-52

Rink 1 - Julia; Mike B; Wilf

Won 23-6

A really strong performance.  Never behind, they restricted Shotesham to only 4 winning ends.  Results like this always give us a good chance in the overall match.

Rink 2 - John C; Chris Starr; Joe

Won - 13-9

A really tight game, swinging back and forth, and, after 10 ends, the score was 7-7.  We had the better of the latter ends and ran out good winners at 13-9.

Rink 3 - Liz Cobbold; Mike C; Richard

Lost - 13-19

We were always struggling against a very good team and, after 12 ends, were losing 8-18.  But we fought back well over the last 4 ends to narrow the score to 13-19.  Mike's luck must change. At the moment, he can find any gap, and any wicks go to the opposition.

Rink 4 - Chris B; Jane; Philip

Won - 19-18

The tightest game of the night.  After 9 ends, the score was 8-8.  On the 11th end, we lost a 7, which looked like 'curtains', both in this game, and the match.  However, over the last few ends, we fought back well and won the tie on the last end with a 2.

Last match of the season and a really good one.  Threatening skies, but the rain held off until we had finished.  It was nearly dark before the last rink finished.

A smashing night against good competitive players who played the match in a really friendly manner.  The match was very tight and, after 12 ends, we were lolsing 48-46, but all the rinks bowled well over the last 4 ends and Shotesham only scored 6 more points while we won 23, to record a really good 68-52 win.

The social evening was as good as the bowls.  A really good spread and lovely company.

The green received a lot of praise from the Shotesham players, and is a great credit to David.  We could do with a few 'lumps and bumps' to put the opposition off!

Great result.  Great season.  Thanks to everybody.

Richard

Great Melton v Hethersett Social - 12-8-2010

Match result - Won - 71-56

Rink 1 - Lawrie; Julia; David P

Lost - 9-25

Just didn't get started in first half and, after 8 ends, we were 16-2 down. Then, Julia took over as lead, with David at no. 2 and Lawrie as skip and, in the second half, we won 4 of the ends, but still couldn't get back at Hethersett

Rink 2 - Jane; Liz Cockerill; Mike C

Lost - 13-16

We got off to a slow start and were 4-9 down after 8 ends. The second half was tighter, with each team winning 4 ends.  Going into the last, and 13-15 down, Mike explained how they nearly won it, holding 3 right till the end, until their skip took over.  A good fightback - fighting for every point wins the team match.

Rink 3 - Chris B; Richard; Norman

Won - 28-7

As captain, I get to pick my team members.  Great lead; great skip.  Makes life very easy. Great result.

Rink 4 - Chris Starr; Sue; Philip

Won - 21-8

Tight first 8 ends, and we were only leading 7-5 at the halfway point.  Super last 8 ends, with some impressive 4's, to win well.

We have never beaten Hethersett Social before, so tonight's result was special.  The rinks were split 2-2, so it matters to win well, and, if you lose, to fight for every point.  Great result.

Rumour has it that there were Scotch murmurs of impending 'doom', but we won well on the night.  (Ah niver dooted ye!!!!!  MCC)

It shows how the strength of the club has improved that, without Wilf, Joe, David M and Peter, we can still beat Hethersett.  Well done, everybody, and thank you for a special evening.

Richard

Easton v Great Melton - 5-8-2010

Match result - Won - 78-56

Rink 1 - Julia; Sue; David Greenacre

Won- 24-15

The opposition only had two team members, but you still have to bowl well to win. A great start, winning the first 5 ends, and still well in control after 13 ends, with the score 19-5. Then, to Easton's credit, they fought back well, winning 4 of the last 5 ends. A very good win in David's first match for the club.

Rink 2 - Lucy; Mike B; Joe

Lost - 13-14

The closest match of the night - never more than a few shots between the teams, but, despite winning the last 2 ends, we just couldn't catch up.

Rink 3 - Chris B; Jenny; Richard

Won - 28-7

With two ladies playing as well as this, anybody could win. Easton had considerably bad luck, finding every gap there was, but we all bowled well and didn't really let them play. Jenny played very well in her first match for the club.

Rink 4 - Janet; Chris Springall; Mike C

Lost - 13-20

Very close until the 10th end, with the score 9-8 to us. However, Easton won 7 ends on the trot, and steadily ground out a good win.

Having only drawn at home, we were expecting a very close game. Each team won on two rinks, but our wins were more conclusive. A very good win against a club who play in several leagues.

Again, a smashing night - a good green, good company, lovely spread.  We are going to miss this in the winter.

Richard

Great Melton v The Mulberry Tree - 3-8-2010

Match result - Lost - 59-68

Rink 1 - Sue; Richard; Wilf

Lost - 14-19

We were outplayed in the first 8 ends by a very good skip, and were losing by 4-13. We were more competitive in the second half, winning 5 of the 8 ends, but still lost by 14-19. As Sue said, you have to admire the skill of a good skip.

Rink 2 - Chris B; Chris Starr; Joe

Won - 16-11

A good solid performance throughout, and we were leading 15-6, with 4 ends to go, but the Mulberry fought back well to only lose 11-16.

Rink 3 - David G; Caroline; Norman

Lost - 14-15

Off to a slow start, and were 7-3 down after 8 ends, but then a 5 and a 3 changed the game round, and we were winning 14-11 until the last end, which the Mulberry won by 4, to win by a single shot.

Rink 4 - Jane; Mike B; David P

Lost - 15-23

Very tight up to the tenth end, with the Mulberry leading 15-13, but then the last 6 ends slipped away to lose 15-23. Again, playing against a very good skip

A very competitive match. We played well, but were up against a very strong Mulberry team, with some very good skips. We did well to only lose by 9 in this match, and by 17 over the two games.

Richard

Cringleford v Great Melton - 26-7-2010

Match Result = Won - 66-50

Rink 1 - Lucy; Sue; Norman

Lost 14-16

A struggle for the first 9 ends, only winning 2 ends, and behind by 5-12.  Then a great fightback in the second half, winning all but 1 end to get the score back to only 2 down.  Norman tells me that both Sue and Lucy played really well.

Rink 2 - Chris B; Richard; Joe

Won 21-7

We lost the first 2 ends, and then only lost 2 more all evening.  We all played well, and mastered the green better than the home side.

Rink 3 - Lawrie; Julia; David M

Won- 22-12

We were always in front and, although we only won 10 ends, our scores were better throughout and we recorded a very good win.

Rink 4 - Liz Cockerill; Chris Starr; Mike C

Lost - 9-15

A very tight game until the 9th end, with the score 6-all, but then the game slipped away and we only won 1 more end.

A really good win, after only managing to draw at home.  At last, we may be getting to grips with their green.

A smashing evening, with lovely company - what bowls is all about.  Even the rain held off until the last 2 ends.

Richard

Great Melton v Brooke - 22nd July 2010

Match result - Won - 80-63

Rink 1 - Lucy; Chris B; Mike C

Lost - 11-21

Tight until the 7th end, with the score 6-5, then we only won two more ends. A difficult game against very good opposition.

Rink 2 - Stan; Sue; Joe

Won - 24-16

In front from the start, then Brooke drew level at 11-all at the halfway point.  Then a good, solid second half, restricting Brooke to 2 winning ends.  A good team performance.

Rink 3 - Liz Cobbold; Mike B; Richard B

Won 20-14

Always in front and, although Brooke pulled back to be 4 behind at 13-9 on the 12th end, the match was never in doubt.  Liz bowled really well throughout, Mike had a purple patch in the middle, and I surprised myself with some good shots near the end!

Rink 4 - Janet; Peter; Norman

Won - 20-14

A tight, tense game throughout, with us falling 13-6 behind by the 11th end.  Then a '6' turned the match, and we only lost 1 of the last 7 ends.  Well done, Janet. and I'm pleased you enjoyed the game.

A lovely warm evening again, against a very strong team from Brooke.  The green was running well, and received considerable praise from our opposition, who enjoyed the opportunity to play longer lengths.

The social evening was very enjoyable, and thanks to everybody for a super spread. The raffle is becoming more embarrassing.  This time, it was down to the 6th ticket before Brooke had a win.  Great to see Norman back to his winning ways - both on the green and in the raffle!

Richard

Great Melton v Easton - 15th July 2010

Match result - drawn - 61-61

Rink 1 - Mike C; John; Wilf

Lost - 9-20

Off to a steady start, winning 5 of the fiirst 6 ends, but then lost a 5 at the next end. Always a struggle after that and, although we won 9 ends, we only got a 1 on each end.  Apparently the opposition was very good, but they always are when you lose!

Rink 2 - Liz Cobbold; Norman; Richard

Won - 22-14

Again, a tight game.  We restricted the opposition to 1's and 2's, and then finished off with a 4 and a 7 to rescue the match.

Rink 3 - David G; Mike B; David M

Won - 19-10

Off to a sound start, winning 8 of the first 10 ends, to lead 14-3.  Easton fought back well, winning 6 of the last 8 ends, but this was still our most convincing win.

Rink 4 - Chris B; Joe; Caroline

Lost - 11-17

Tight until the 11th end, at 8 each, then the second half slipped away, with us only winning 2 ends.

Again, the weather was kind and, despite the wind, we had a most enjoyable evening..  Easton played very well on all rinks, and we did well to rescue a draw.

Lots of claims for saving the match.  Rink 1 claimed their 1 on the last end saved it.  Rink 2 claimed that their 4 and 7 on the last 2 ends were the telling scores.  Rink 4 claimed that they were playing last and the 1 they made on the last end was the shot that saved the match.  Good job Caroline didn't know it was all down to her!

A most enjoyable match, and Easton are very sociable guests.

Richard

Great Melton v Wymondham Priory - 6th July, 2010

Match result - Won 89-55

Rink 1 - Stan; Chris B; David M

Won - 27-17

Both teams won 9 ends, but we had some very big ends, including a 6 , to win well.

Rink 2 - Liz Cobbold; Mike B; Joe

Won - 25-9

Wonderful bowling until the 12th end, when we were leading 25-1.  The Priory team then took control, and won the last 6 ends, to pull back to 25-9.

Rink 3 - Jane; David P; Peter

Won - 19-17

Well in control after 9 ends, with the score 13-5, then 18-11 up after 12 ends. The Priory then won 5 of the last 6 ends, to make this the closest match of the night.

Rink 4 - Lucy; Richard B; Mike C

Won 18-12

Struggled for the first 10 ends, to be losing 9-4.  A win on the 11th gave us the jack and, with long ends, we ran away with the second half, although the Priory did win the last 3 ends, with singles.

Again, a lovely warm summer's evening, great competition, great company, and a smashing social get-together.  We reversed our loss at the Priory with a very good score of 89-55.

The raffle was an embarrassment - 8 prizes, and the first 9 tickets out were home players!  At last, the 10th ticket was won by the Priory, to prove they had been entered!

Richard

Wicklewood v Great Melton - 24th June 2010

Match Result - Won 90-58

Rink 1 - Lawrie; Caroline; David P

Lost 14-25

Always a struggle and playing 'catch-up' all night.  Got back to 16-11 down on 12th end, but then it slipped away.

Rink 2 - Sue; Chris Starr; Mike C

Won 27-15

Wonderful first 10 ends, to lead 20-4. Second half belonged to Wicklewood until a 5 to us on the very last end gave us a very good score.

Rink 3 - Liz Cobbold; Richard B; David M

Won 27-7

Always in front from the start and restricted Wicklewood to 5 scoring ends.  All three of us had a good night and bowled consistently throughout.

Rink 4 - Julia; Joe; Wilf

Close until the 9th end, with the score at 9-7, then a very strong second half, to win comfortably 22-11.  Wicklewood restricted to only 6 winning ends all night.

Lovely warm evening, lovely people and a win (even if the green was difficult and unpredictable).  Wicklewood is one of our favourite away matches.  Smashing company, good food and draught beer.  AND we won!

Richard

Great Melton v Cringleford - 22nd June 2010

Match Result - Drew 64-64

Rink 1
- Jane; David M; David P

Lost - 13-20

Off to a great start, with a 6, but then struggled to keep ahead and, by the 15th end, the score was 13-13.  Cringleford won the last 3 ends to win the game.

Rink 2 - David G; Julia; Peter

Won - 19-13

Very tight until the 7th end, with the score 6-5, but then we won 4 ends on the trot, to lead 15-5.  Cringleford fought back well over the last 7 ends, to reduce the deficit to 6.  Our best winning rink.

Rink 3 - Colin; Mike C; Joe

Won - 19-17

Well behind by the 9th end, losing 12-5, but a spirited fightback took us to a 19-15 lead with one end to go.  In what proved to be the decisive end for the match, overall, Cringleford scored a 2 to leave the final score 19-17.

Rink 4 - Stan; Caroline; Richard B

Lost 13-14

Tight all the way, with never more than the odd shot between us.  13-each going into the last end, but Cringleford got a single shot on the last end, to win the game.

A wonderful warm evening in good company, with the green running well.  A super night.

The match was tight on all rinks, and was decided by the last bowl, on the last rink playing.

Well done, Colin, for playing so well in your first match.

Richard

Great Melton v Hethersett PF  -  15 June 2010

Match result - won 91-27

Rink 1
- Stan; Julia; Richard B

Won 22-9

In front all the way, with Stan leading very well, ably supported by Julia.

Rink 2 - Jane; Chris B; Peter

Won 25-5

In front from the start and bulit up a commanding 19-1 lead after 9 ends.  The next 7 ends were more competitive and we ended on a very sound 25-5.

Rink 3 - Liz Cobbold; David G; Philip

Won 21-5

Always in front, scoring regularly.  Restricted Hethersett to only 5 winning ends, each of 1 shot.

Rink 5 - Sue; Chris Starr; Mike C

Won 23-8

10-nil up before Hethersett scored, then solid bowling to win comfortably.

We only managed to win by 10 in the away fixture, so this was a very good result.  Mike thinks it may be our biggest winning margin, and this was with only 16 ends played, because of the cold.  (Correction - we beat Wicklewood by 71 points in 2006! - Mike C)

A cold evening but the green bowled well and Hethersett are good company, so a most enjoyable evening, both during and after the match.

Richard

Hethersett Social v Great Melton – 11th June 2010

Rink 1
– Lucy; Chris B; Mike C

Lost 13-19
Very tight to the 16th end, when we were leading 13-12, but then we lost the last 5 ends.

Rink 2 – Stan; Richard; Wilf
Lost 15-25

After the 10th end, the score was 10-10, but we only managed to win 3 of the last 11 ends and the game slipped away.

Rink 3 – Lawrie; Chris Starr; Norman
Lost 14-21

Always behind from the start and, despite a good 4 in the 12th end, were just not able to catch up.

Rink 4
– Peter; David G; David P

Lost 15-19

A good tight game throughout, which just slipped away over the last 4 ends.  Best result of the night.

Match result – Lost 57-84

Not the forecast ‘ritual slaughter’, but still a defeat.  We struggle at Hethersett Social with the 2 woods, the roving cot and against some very competitive players.
A decent result and let’s hope we are able to take advantage of 3 woods, fixed rinks and long jacks to get our revenge at home.

Richard

Brooke v Great Melton - 8th June 2010

Won - 71-63

Rink 1
- Jane; Richard B; Philip
Won - 19-12

Well in front until the 10th end (14-4), when we had a little wobble, but came back to win well.  Jane continues to lead really well and won this game for us.

Rink 2 - Liz Cobbold; Sue; Mike C
Won - 21-14

Always in the lead and, until the 16th end, had restricted Brooke to only 5 single-shot ends, and led 21-5.  Then Brooke fought back well to win 9 shots over the last 3 ends to give a final result 0f 21-14.

Rink 3 - Lawrie; Julia; Peter
Lost 18-22

After a close first 5 ends we fell well behind, to be 15-4 down after 10 ends, a 6 and a 4 on 2 ends being the difference between the sides.  A good fightback in the second half rescued the score, to end up as close losers on 18-22.

Rink 4 - Chris B; John C; David M
Lost - 13-15

Nip and tuck all the way through, going into the final end at 13-all.  A very tight game with no high-scoring ends either way.

After watching the rain falling all afternoon, in the Melton/Wymondham area, we were amazed to be told that there had been very little rain at brooke, and that the green was playable.

The green was damp, but the grass was still quite fast and the evening dried out, to allow us a very enjoyable match.  Brooke play the game in very much the same spirit that we do, and we all had a very pleasant evening.  Nice to win, as well.

Richard

Mulberry Tree v Great Melton - 1 June 2010
Lost 53-61

Rink 2
- Lucy; Mike B; Joe
Drew - 14-14

Off to a great start and 12-4 up after 9 ends.  However, the Mulberry team fought back well over the last 7 ends, winning 5 and gettin a well-earned draw.

Rink 3 - Chris B; David P; Norman
Won -16-14

Off to flying start, 7 up after 3 ends.  By halfway, at 8 ends, the score was back to 9-8. From there on, it was nip and tuck, and we managed to hold on for a good 16-14 win.

Rink 4 - Liz Cobbold; Richard B; Peter
Lost - 9-18

We only managed to win 5 ends and were outplayed throughout. Their skip destroyed one or two good-looking ends but, to be honest, they were just better than us.

Rink 5 - Stan; John C; Wilf
Lost - 14-15

A poor first 8 ends, with the halfway score at 3-13. A great fightback in the second half, winning 7 of 8 ends, to so nearly pull off a great win.

A damp evening with the grass wet didn't help, but the green played well. A great fighting performance on 3 rinks, but my rink didn't really compete.  We only lost by 8, so we need to win by a bigger score at home, to retain the cup.

Richard

Barnham Broom (home) – Thursday, 27 May, 2010
Won  87-37

Rink 1
              Julia

                        David P

                        David M

                        Won 26-5

Brilliant win.  Barnham Broom only won 3 ends all evening.  David M tells me that both Julia and David P were bowling really well and made his life easy.

Rink 2              Liz Cockerill

                        Philip

                        Wilf

                        Won 31-5

An even better win.  Restricted opposition to only 4 winning ends.  We won 11 of last 12 ends.

Rink 3              Jane

                        Richard B

                        Norman

                        Won 16-10

Another solid win.  Always in front, but Tom Gray is a good skip and kept pegging us back.  We also had any luck that was going.  A friendly, noisy rink.

Rink 4              Chris B

                        John C

                        Joe

                        Lost 14-17

Tight all the way through.  Fell behind by 6 by 16th end, and, although we won the last 2, it was just not enough.

Barnham Broom are super guests and we had an enjoyable match, followed by an even better evening in the bar.  A really great result in a match played in such a friendly manner.

Thanks to every body for some really fabulous food, and also to David G for preparing the green so well.  It really is bowling well.

Let’s hope Tom Gray manages to keep his Barnham Broom membership up, and that they continue to exist, so we can have more evenings like this.

Richard

May 20th - Great Melton v Wicklewood

Match result - won 88-43

Rink 1  -  Mike B; Caroline; MIke C

Solid performance from start to finish.  Opposition only once scored more than 1.

Rink 2  -  Lucy; David P; Wilf

Another solid peformance, scoring regularly to lead 17-8 with 2 ends to go, then another wobble at the end, just like the Priory.  This time, it didn't affect the overall result.

Rink 3  -  Stan; Richard B; Joe

Consistent bowling against a very good skip who saved several big ends.  Wicklewood kept trying and won last last 4 ends.  Stan continues to have a very good season.

Rink 4  -  Chris B; Norman; David M

Bit tense until 8th end, at 5-4, btu ran away with second half.

This is why we love bowls.  A warm evening, good company, the green running well, great food, a few beers and a win. Nothing better.

Thanks to everybody for the food, the raffle, the assistance with the buffet, and the supporters who came along to give us encoiuragement.

Thanks also to David for the green, which is getting better by the day, and was much admired by the visitors.

Richard

Wymondham Priory v Great Melton - 11th May 2010

Rink 1 – Chris B, Richard B and Wilf – lost 23-11

Close competition until the 14th end, when the score was 12-11 to Wymondham.  We just didn’t play at all in the last two ends and lost a 5 and a 6.  Just couldn’t do anything between us.

Rink 2 - Jane, Mike B and David M - won 23-12
Always winning, a good, steady performance with two big ends of 5 and 4 near the end, to win comfortably.

Rink 3 – Julia, Mike C and Peter – won 21-8

In front from the start, we scored steadily throughout to record a very good win.

Rink 4 – Stan, Lucy and Philip – lost 25-8

Didn’t get started in the first half; improved in second half, but never going to beat a very good team.

Match Report  -  Result – Lost by 3 ; 67 to 64.

The Priory is a lovely place to play bowls – a good, big green and really friendly people.

We really should have recorded our third straight win and avenged last year’s defeat (and the year before’s – and the year before that’s!) but our rink threw it away on the last 2 ends.  Sorry, everybody, but we were trying – really!

Let’s hope we get some warmth soon, so we don’t have to wear so many layers!

Richard

Hethersett PF (away) – 6-5-10

Rink 1 – Chris B, Richard B, and Norman – lost 12-20.  Won 11 of the 21 ends, but outplayed by our 3 lady opponents.  They made good use of their green knowledge and scored well, while restricting us to 1’s and 2’s.

Rink 2 – Jane, Lucy, and Peter – won 20-16.  Struggled to get back level by the 10th and then built up a good lead to 20-12.  Lost the last 4 but restricted Hethersett to only 1 on each end.

Rink 3 – Laurie, Caroline, and Wilf – lost 17-23.  Close until the 12th end and them Hethersett pulled out a good lead to 19-12.  Got back close with 4 winning ends before losing the last 2.

Rink 4 – Liz Cockerill, Mike C, and Joe – won 34-15.  Again very close until 10th end then a 6 and a 4 changed the match.  Great second half to get a great match-winning score.

A super result, winning 84-74 on a very cold night.  Liz, Mike and Joe rescued the night for us, but it proves that, even when losing, every point counts towards a winning score.

The cot didn’t ‘rove’ too much and the green was rolling very fast.  Smashing people, and nice to reverse last year’s score.  Let’s hope it’s warmer for the return match.

Richard Bolton (Captain)

Shotesham (away) – Friday, 30th April, 2010

A winning start – 79 points to 83.

The Shotesham green looked in great condition, and bowled well, with a fair amount of turn.

The match was played in a very friendly manner and we didn’t let a little rain, and frozen fingers, spoil our evening!

Lovely people, a great chocolate cake, and a win!  Great way to start the season.
